When I first read the how to on sewing french seams in a pattern I was using I was totally confused!!!! I remember thinking there is no way I can do that. Then my wonderful Mother-In-Law took the time to show me how. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Why was I soooo scared to try it?!?! Since I don't have a serger I french seam all of the garments I make.
I thought maybe some of you might be confused by it too. So I'm gonna show you how easy it really is.
Lay your pieces WRONG sides together.
Sew a 1/4" seam.
Cut the seam down to 1/8".
Like this.
Iron the seam towards the back.
.
Flip fabric inside out and iron the seam flat.
Sew a 1/4" seam. (This will encase your raw edge seam.)
Here is what it will look like.
Iron the seam to the back.
That's it. Now you have a french seam.
Now that you know how to do a french seam why should you do it. Sure it takes a little ibit longer to sew your garment butif you don't have a serger it will keep your seams pretty...no more ugly frayed seams. Even if you zigzag your seams they still won't look this pretty! It really does finish the inside of your garment and gives it a more professional or boutique look.

ReplyDeleteI serge everything, but every once in a while I need to do a French seam and I hate it because I never know for sure if I am doing it right--especially since I don't usually use them! This tutorial is great!!
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I am self taught, I didn't even know there was such a thing. I have had a serger for a year now and still have not used it. Scared I guess. I tried it on 2 outfits. The 1st, I didn't leave enough seam allowance and the 2nd worked out great. It looks much better. I
