Travel Trash Bag

Every time we take a trip whether it's for the day to go shopping or for a week or two on vacation we end up with trashed  floor boards. Sometimes to the point that a Coke bottle or empty chip bag falls out as the kids are getting out of the car.   Sad...... and rather embarrassing (to me anyway).  I wanted and needed to do something about this. We are apparently very trashy people because the little car trash bags sold commercially would last about 5 minutes before needing to be emptied.  So I took matters into my hands and made of some big enough to hold all of our trash with a little bit of room to spare. 

Cleaning the car is soooooo much easier now!

 Supplies Needed:

  1/2 yard fabric 
• 
  
  Interfacing
• 
  
  Scissors
• 
  
  Velcro
• 
  
  Thread
• 
  
  Sewing machine

To get started grab your fabric and cut:

• 
  
  Rectangle of fabric 20" x  15"
• 
  
  2 fabric rectangles 2"x 11" (straps)
• 
  
  2 pieces of interfacing 2"x 11"
• 
  
  1 package of boning

Iron interfacing to the wrong side of the strap pieces following manufacturers instructions.

Fold straps in half so they are long and narrow. Sew. Leave one end open for turning.

Fold the big rectangle in half right sides together. Sew.

At the top fold over 1/4" and iron.

Fold another 3/4" and iron.

Pin the straps to the bag 2 inches in on either side. (see picture)

Sew. Make sure to leave a 1" opening to put the boning in through.

Here is what it will look like at this point.

Cut a 15" piece of  boning.

Insert the boning through the hole.  Adjust it so the boning ends at the strap on both sides.

 Sew the hole shut.

 

Sew Velcro onto your straps.

Put it in your car and be amazed at how much cleaner the car will stay. I made 2 of them. One for each seat back. It has worked wonders. We drove from North Carolina to Mandeville, LA and they were almost full. So much better than a trashy floor board and no more embarrassing moments for Mom. YAY!!!!

TIPS:

Use heavy duty velcro or make straps long enough to tie. 

The kids pulled them right off so I ended up tie-ing them
