A Skort Gets A New Life

While thrifting a few weeks ago we found this cute denim skort.

I turned it into this cute purse!

I know this is nothing new as jean purses were huge a few years ago.  I never got into it back then, but now I see why it was such a big thing! They are fun to make and you have plenty of built in pockets.
Since these were skorts I used the shorts beneath for the lining.

Here's how I did it.

First I sewed the bottom shut.

Then I cut the bottom corners at an angle.

fold the cut edges so the seams meet.

and sew.  This will box out the bottom.

Next I turned the skorts inside out and cut the crotch of the shorts off. Don't sew this shut yet.

I wanted to add a zipper pocket to the inside so I cut a piece of knit fabric (tshirt) that matched into a 7"x4" rectangle. Sew the zipper to one of the long edges.

Next I laid it on the inside of the skort about 1.5" from the bottom of the waistband.

Flip the pocket up and pin zipper in place then sew.

Flip it back down fold under raw edges 1/4" and pin in place.

Sew close to the edge.  Now you have your inner pocket.

Sew the raw edges of the shorts together. You can set this aside for a few minutes.

Grab an old pair of jeans and a seam ripper and take the waistband off.

Sew the open edge of the waistband shut.

On the side with the buttonhole find a decorative button larger than the hole.

Sew it to one side of the purse.

Now pull the jean button from the other end and you'll have a small hole. Put a button there and sew to the other side of the purse.

Now for the button on the skort front. I used some hot glue.

And added another pretty button to match the other two.

It looks like a lot of steps but it was pretty quick to whip up.
