This weekend Dakota wanted to do another sewing project. We had recently bought some super hero fabric for him and he decided it should be pillowcases. This is great beginner sewing project! I cut out the fabric for him and then he did all the sewing. He finished 2 of them. (He still has 2 more to go).
He did such a good job!!!!
If you saw this pillowcase up close you would never know it was made by a 6 year old. I think he is a natural sewer. It must run in the blood :o)
Supplies Needed:
3/4 yard Main Fabric
10" Fabric For Band
Thread
Rotary Cutter and Mat
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Iron
Pinking Sheers (optional)
Cut the main fabric 44" x 22"
Cut the Contrasting band fabric 10" x 22"
Main fabric right sides together and stitch up each side.
Lay the band pieces one on top of the other right side together and stitch each side.
Zig zag stitch raw edge. (skip this step if you used pinking sheers to cut the fabric)
Zig zag stitch raw edge. (skip this step if you used pinking sheers to cut the fabric)
Press seams to one side.
Press seams to one side.
Fold band in half and press.
Pin band to the right side of the main fabric. Stitch.
Zig zag stitch raw edge. (skip this step if you used pinking sheers to cut the fabric)
Flip the band out. This is what it will look like.
Press seam toward the main fabric.
That's it. Now admire your lovely pillowcase!
I love that you are teaching your little boy to sew. I gave mine basic sewing instructions when he was young and he loved it. When he went to college, he needed a job on campus and walked into the theatre costume department and said "I can sew." and they immediately said "you're hired"! He worked there 3.5 years and graduated In May this year. The college just hired him full time, salaried with benefits and his own office...in charge of the costume department and the box office! Yay for boys who sew!
