Upcycled Picnic Skirt

I love to upcycle clothing.  Anything clothing item I think I might be able to use in some way I stash in a pile.
As you can imagine with two growing children the pile grows quickly. So does the need for "new" clothes.
With spring here. It means warmer weather, playing in the sand at the beach, and playing at the park.
It also means skirts and dresses for Aiyanna.  The girl loves them! If given a choice between shorts/capris and a dress or skirt the dress or skirt wins out 97% of the time. I couldn't be happier!

I wanted to make her a skirt. Something that was simple and roomy. Something that she would be able to run and play in.

So I grabbed a button down shirt that I had gotten from a thrift store for next to nothing.

The first thing I did was take off the pocket using my seam ripper.
Where it was placed at I would have cut right through the pocket and I didn't want to do that.
I knew I would find something I wanted to use it for.

Next I folded the shirt in half.

I cut the shirt straight across under the armpits as pictured above.

Unfold the shirt.
Then at the top edge you just cut Fold it down 1/4" and then another 1"

Sew close to the fold. Thread elastic through.
You could leave it like this and be done, but I thought it needed something more.

So I decided to add the pocket to it.  I love the little embroidered butterfly. Isn't it cute?

Now it's finished!
